Lee McColgan’s career in finance was probably doomed as soon as he started visiting historic house museums. The first one he toured was the Fairbanks House, in Dedham, Mass., the oldest surviving timber-frame home in America, built in 1637. It was 2014, and Mr. McColgan was living in Omaha, where he worked as a sales representative for a large investment company. Despite a rural childhood in Vermont and an interest in visual arts and building, he had spent much of his adulthood working in a cubicle: five years of “jacking in” at a call center outside Boston, followed by several more as a Midwestern “external wholesaler” pitching mutual funds to financial advisers.

In the span of less than a week, two universities have rescinded commencement speaking invitations to Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the American ambassador to the United Nations, because of student opposition to the United States’ support of Israel during the war in Gaza. Xavier University, an historically Black institution in New Orleans, withdrew its invitation to Ms. Thomas-Greenfield earlier this week, saying in a statement that “a number of students” had objected to her giving a commencement address. The president of Xavier, Reynold Verret, indicated that he was concerned about the possibility of disruptions during the graduation ceremony this weekend, and came to the conclusion that Xavier could no longer host her — a situation he said was “regrettable.”Mr. Verret added that he looked forward to having Ms. Thomas-Greenfield, one of only two Black women to hold the U.N. ambassador post, visit the school and speak “in the future.”The University of Vermont announced last week that Ms. Thomas-Greenfield would not be speaking there, agreeing to a key demand from by student demonstrators who set up an encampment on the campus in Burlington. Washington CNN —President Joe Biden’s decision this week to make public his ultimatum that a major Israeli offensive in the city of Rafah would result in a shut-off of some US weapons did not come easily or lightly. CNN —More than 16,000 pounds of raw ground beef products were recalled by the US Department of Agriculture on Wednesday on concerns the meat may be contaminated with E. coli. The meat items, produced by Cargill Meat Solutions, were sold at Walmart retail locations across the United States. According to a recall notice from the USDA, the potentially contaminated beef was produced on April 26 and April 27. “At Walmart, the health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” a Walmart spokesperson told CNN in a statement. Walmart customers who have purchased any affected products should throw them away or return them to the place where they were purchased, according to the agency.

The nationwide campus protests are not as pervasive as mass civil rights and anti-Vietnam War protests that raged in the 1960s and 1970s.
